The Essential Ingredient

46 Foveaux St, Surry Hills

THE ESSENTIAL INGREDIENT

Food is our common ground

The Essential Ingredient Surry Hills carries every-day, hard-to-find and speciality ingredients and kitchenware for home and professional cooks and bakers.

We stock timeless and recent release cookbooks and pretty things for the table. We have all the tools you’ll need for your home bar, knives to suit your skill and budget and plenty of room for inspiration.

We have a cooking school, offer a weekly knife sharpening service and can also hire you specialty cake tins. All our staff know food, are good cooks and can answer your cooking and equipment questions.

If you’re on the hunt for something specific, we encourage you to phone the store ahead of time to check on availability.

Our cooking school is all about the love of cooking – yours and ours. We offer a variety of classes in a relaxed and friendly environment with the sole objective of highlighting the joy of sharing the pleasures of the table with friends and family.

Our classes range from basic knife skills, where enthusiastic cooks learn to sharpen, slice and dice, to regional specialty classes such as, Spanish, Moroccan, Malaysian, Indian, Asian and Italian.

We also host events.

GETTING HERE

PARKING

St Margaret’s Car Park at 417-435 Bourke Street, Surry Hills is a great option for parking with 80 spaces available and a 5-minute walk from the Cooking School. Casual parking rates after 5 pm are $4/hour.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

From Central Station, you can either walk up Foveaux Street (an easy up hill stroll that takes less that ten minutes, depending on your speed) or catch the 374 or 376 bus from Eddy Avenue and alight at the intersection of Albion and Crown streets. From there, it’s an easy walk and there’s plenty of Surry Hills action to take in on the way.

The trip to Surry Hills for our lovely Roselle customers involves catching the 433 bus from opposite Rozelle Public School to Railway Square. From here, either walk or hop on the 374 or 376 bus (as outlined above).
